Since purchasing their land in 2021, Kristy and Matt have recorded 118 bird species, 10 frog species and 20 mammal species. Threatened Species include: Grey-crowned Babbler, Little Lorikeet, Varied Sittella, Glossy Black Cockatoo and Eastern Free-tail Bats. They have fenced off the Riparian Zones and are currently converting about 40Ha to permanent conservation to protect woodland, open forest and a rainforest gully on the upper slopes of the land. They run 40 head of Angus on the lower slopes.
Join us for a morning of Bird Spotting and lively discussion with Kristy Peters (BirdLife Australia) who will give us an overview of how to protect biodiversity and provide habitat for birds and other animals whilst maintaining productivity for her herd of cattle.
We will look at some key farm management strategies such as:
- farm dams as habitat
- management of riparian zones
- wildlife friendly fencing
- supporting bird life on farms
- key threats to our local bird populations
- benefits of retaining and expanding stands of native vegetation on farms.
This event is possible thanks to the shared work of the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust and Landcare NSW under the Private Land Conservation Matters project, supported locally by MidCoast Council.
