Join us for an engaging and hands-on workshop on artificial habitats and their importance in conservation on July 25th at Bendemeer Town Hall. Learn about modular nest box systems, specialized habitat solutions, and participate in field installations of various habitat structures. Workshop Overview

Presentation: Artificial Habitats and Their Science

We will start with an engaging presentation covering the following topics:

  • Overview of Artificial Habitat: Understanding the science behind artificial habitats and their importance in conservation.
  • Development of Habitat Modular Nest Box System: Insights into the design and development of our innovative nest box system.
  • Various Configurations and Species: Detailed look at the different configurations of Habitat nest boxes and the species that utilize them.
  • Specialized Habitat Solutions: Exploration of marsupial dens, black cockatoo, and forest owl nest boxes, as well as carved hollows and other alternatives.

This session will last about 2 hours and will be packed with valuable information and discussions. We encourage lots of questions and conversations to make the most of this learning experience.

Field Session: Hands-On Habitat Installation

After the presentation, we'll head out into the field for a practical session where you will:

  • Walk and Talk: We'll discuss what to look for in suitable sites for habitat installation, considering the different species and types of artificial habitats.
  • Nest Box Installation: Learn how to install a Habitat modular nest box, which will take approximately 30 minutes.
  • Marsupial Den Installation: Get involved in the installation process, including carrying rocks, logs, sticks, and soil. This hands-on activity is a great opportunity for everyone to contribute. Please bring gloves for the day. Depending on the number of participants, this will take around 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Raptor Platform Installation: Participate in the installation of a raptor platform, which will take about 1-2 hours. This is the most challenging part of the day, but also incredibly rewarding.

Throughout the day, we aim to foster an interactive environment where everyone feels comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas.

  • Date and Time: 9.30 July 25th
  • Location: Bendemeer Town Hall and move to Gardiners Road Bendemeer
  • What to Bring: Gloves, comfortable outdoor clothing, and a passion for learning!

We can adapt the session to be inside or outside, depending on the weather, ensuring everyone has a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Do you have a few highlights or outcomes either about the topic or about what made the event so successful?

  •  The Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) is currently applying for a grant to replicate the same event
  •  Shelley McDouall (RLC) is currently seeking more funding from BCT to replicate the filed day across the network
  •  The local rangers and ecologist Phil Spark want to collect seed samples of endemic species off property used for field day
  •  Attendee wants to use the field day property as a release site for WIRES.
  • The event was successful as the subject was very relevant to landcarers hearts, creating habitats for native fauna! The day was a balance between  science based information, well presented, friendly environment and passionate and engaged attendees.
