Field Day 7:Koala Food Tree workshop - Eucalypt ID, Seed Collection and Propagation
We are celebrating National Tree Day with a practical exercise in identifying Koalas in the field. You will learn how to identify a few of their favourite food trees with local restoration and nursery expert, Kim Gollan. We will also look for scats and other markers in the field. There will be practical demonstrations with detection dogs, drones and song meters, all of which are expanding our understanding of koala distribution in the local area.
Kim and Peter will be hosting the event at their beautiful Conservation Property at Minimbah, which is home to a host of Threatened Species and Ecological Communities. Located in Worimi Country, this property is the perfect setting to learn what to look for when searching for Koalas in the field. Kim will share her expansive knowledge of plant identification around the locally occurring koala food trees, including the difference between juvenile and adult leaf morphology. We will be joined by our Landcare members and staff, clients and staff from the Biodiversity Conservation Trust, and experts from MidCoast Council.
The team from Canines for Wildlife will demonstrate how their koala detecting dogs are experts at identifying traces of koala inhabitation in the field.
