Event Outcome
General verbal feedback indicated a mix of learning from presenters, socialising with others, good food and atmosphere, and of course seeing some nocturnal animals made for a good event.
Landcarers were treated to the fanciest of field days at last night’s Wonders of the Woodlands event.
A starry sky was the backdrop to our dinner and spotlight walk at a picturesque property in Buraja. The evening commenced with (non-alcoholic) drinks, nibblies and good conversation, followed by a sit-down meal. A tour by torchlight, led by NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust’s Mason Crane, took us to River Red Gum and Box Gum grassy woodlands to observe nocturnal animals.
The property is frequented by possums, owls and a variety of other birds, and attendees were pleased to discover an abundance of Ringtail and Brushtail Possums.
Presentations over dinner from landholder, Alistair Robb, Ben Humphries from BirdLife Australia, and Mason Crane, enlightened guests on the topics of private land conservation and how biodiversity can be supported.
A big thank you to everyone involved in making this event come to life:
* Landholders – the Robb family
* Colleen O’Malley and Mason Crane from NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust
* Ben Humphries from BirdLife Australia
* Paula Sheehan, Regional Landcare Coordinator from Holbrook Landcare
* Corowa District Landcare Chair, Brendan Christy
* Bluegum Café & Catering

Feedback from Event organisers

In regards to lessons learnt from hosting an event of this nature:
  • It was evident that there is an appetite amongst the landcare community to learn more about BCT and BirdLife programs, and a keenness for understanding, in detail, options for funding conservation initiatives on their properties. It will be important to follow up with people interested in such programs in a timely manner following this event.
  • The event scope, incorporating informative presentations, a tangible activity (woodland walk), and good food/socialising was a successful combination. This mix drew an audience who are ready to take action in conservation, and learn about their next steps.
  • Mixed channels of promotional distribution ensured that the event sold out, with a number of new faces in attendance.
  • The social aspect of landcaring is always incorporated into our events, and having the opportunity to surprise attendees with a high quality, formal dinner setting at this event was very fulfilling to both attendees and hosts.
  • It was highly beneficial to have a team of three landcare staff, one landcare volunteer and three presenters, given the scope of this event. This ensured good organisation and opportunity for engagement with all attendees.
  • Collaboration is key - bringing landcare, BCT and BirdLife Australia together is highly supportive for our organisations, and in turn landholders.
